چکیده

The general objective of this study is to clear up the relative importance of prosody in the identification of a foreign accent. The methodology we propose, based on the prosody transplantation paradigm, can be applied to different languages or language varieties. Here, it is applied to Magrhrebian-accented French: we wanted to study what is perceived when the segmental and suprasegmental characteristics of Maghrebian and native French speakers are crossed. Results obtained with French listeners (accent degree rating task) and Algerian listeners (origin identification task) converge and suggest that the articulation of phonemes overrides prosody to account for Maghrebian accents in French.

Adapting to suprasegmental lexical stress errors in foreign-accented speech.

Can native listeners rapidly adapt to suprasegmental mispronunciations in foreign-accented speech? To address this question, an exposure-test paradigm was used to test whether Dutch listeners can improve their understanding of non-canonical lexical stress in Hungarian-accented Dutch. During exposure, one group of listeners heard a Dutch story with only initially stressed words, whereas another ...

Orienting Asymmetries in Dogs’ Responses to Different Communicatory Components of Human Speech

It is well established that in human speech perception the left hemisphere (LH) of the brain is specialized for processing intelligible phonemic (segmental) content (e.g., [1-3]), whereas the right hemisphere (RH) is more sensitive to prosodic (suprasegmental) cues. Despite evidence that a range of mammal species show LH specialization when processing conspecific vocalizations, the presence of ...

The Perceptual Effect of L1 Prosody Transplantation on L2 Speech: The Case of French Accented German

Research has shown that language learners are not only challenged by segmental differences between their native language (L1) and the second language (L2). They also have problems with the correct production of suprasegmental structures, like phone/syllable duration and the realization of pitch. These difficulties often lead to a perceptible foreign accent. This study investigates the influence...
